Accounting for 15% of all tobacco sales in Wales, the illegal tobacco market undermines key initiatives including; taxation, age restrictions and point-of-sale display bans. It is sold to our young people at pocket money prices, making it easily accessible.
In light of this, Welsh Government set up a Wales Illegal Tobacco Programme with the aim of tackling the supply of, and demand for, illegal tobacco in Wales. Supported by partner organisations, we want to work with the public to change the perception that this is a victimless crime.
This event will set the scene of the current situation in Wales, include key presentations from experts in the field of illegal tobacco, plus roundtable discussions on the next steps Wales specifically should take to tackle the illegal tobacco market.
