Parc Prison in Bridgend County is to ban smoking by February 2016, the Ministry of Justice has announced.

In Wales the Smoke-free Premises etc (Wales) Regulations 2007 make no exemption for prisons unlike the English Smoke-free Regulations 2007. Nationally, around 80 per cent of prisoners smoke.

We would like to see all prisons in Wales go smokefree and provide support to prisoners to remain tobacco-free when they return to the community. The exposure of prisoners and prison staff to secondhand smoke is no longer acceptable and prisoners who want to quit smoking should be supported to do.
